Whoops, Not Me
So tonight Gordon Brown has said that this should be an end to the age of irresponsibility. Can you Labour supporters just confirm something to me? This age of irresponsibility would be the same period as the end to boom and bust wouldn't it? This age of irresponsibility would be the decade that Labour, and especially Brown, have precided over wouldn't it? This age of irresponsibility comes from a political irresponsibility that leaves us all wondering what tomorrow may bring.

Before I begin, I'm not speaking as a Labour supporter.
It seems a bit strange to describe the era you've presided over as 'irresponsible' to me. But I think these problems go back further, to the deregulation of the financial markets, back in the 1980s, I believe. I'm not old enough to remember much in the way of economics from the 80s but I believe that's when the moves towards removing limits on earning-to-lending ratios and such-like began, which I think is just one of the causes of the current situation, as well as moves towards abstract financial transactions - the trading of currencies which destabilised whole economies. I'm not saying this is entirely the Tories' fault, it's clearly a global phenomenon, but I don't think it's fair to lay the blame completely in Gordon's lap.
