The Mints With the Holes

We took "A" to a polo match today. I have wanted to go to one for ages and with her current interest in horses thought it might be fun. She enjoyed the picnic, and playing with the binoculars, but I would ahve to say it wasn't a success. She got bored early on as there wasn't enough to keep her interest. I, however, had a great time.

Polo does seem like quite a strange idea. Do the horses enjoy it?

That is actually a serious question... As I understand it, dogs are supposed to quite like racing, but horses not so much, maybe because they have a person sitting on them and hitting them. I kind of think that to enjoy polo they'd have to understand what's going on and be motivated by it, which seems unlikely, but I don't really know.

Personally I'd rather play hockey...

I don't think I have heard that horses don'tenjoy racing. There is a different question which is "is it good for them" but I don't think I will go into that here, maybe at Greenbelt.

But enjoy. Well, the horse looked fired up, they looked excited. Let's face it, could an 80kg person really make a 500kg horse do something if it didn't want to. Riding is about working with the horse, always knowing that ultimately the horse can do what it wants.

But enjoy, it's an anthropomorphism isn't it. Animals do things for the reward. The reward may well be praise, or feeling part of the herd, or food, or the adrenalin rush (which I am sure they get).
