Sick

No blog yesterday as the computer was really struggling. Not sure if it was a virus or Vista. Any help appreciated. The computer seems to lock up and nothing will work. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't bring up the Vista equivalent of the task manager. Instead after 30-60 second the screen goes black and then, after another 30 seconds or so, an error box comes up, headed "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog" and containing the message "Failure - security options". Clicking on the "OK" button does nothing and the only option is to turn the computer off at the mains.

hey Merlin,

had this kind of thing happen on my laptop too. I found out that it was windows search that was causing the problem.

did the following to switch it off and its been ok since

open task manager, nav to the services tab, click the services button at the bottom then find Windows Search near the bottom and right click on it. select properties then set startup type to disabled. Press apply and it should be ok thereafter

I have had about 10 hits on my site by people searching for "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog". SO not an uncommon problem. Pity none of them left comments or we might have built up a big picture. My search of the internet wasn't very productive. I had, however, gone into the start up options and turned off a lot of programmes that start automatically on booting up (although not the Windows search). In Vista there is a "Windows Defender" that allows you to adjust the startup programs. Seems to have helped. Vista has a lot of tools and there is also a "Problem Reports and Solutions" screen and, interestingly "Microsoft Windows Search Protocol" appears as a problem on two occassions when the crash occurred, however it obviously isn't the only thing. I also found another log of error messages that indicated itunes might be a problem, so I have upgraded to the new version of that. I am finding Vista is very ppowerful for fault finding, it is finding where to access the info has been the difficult bit but I am rapidly learning.

New idea. I have uninstalled "Bullguard" my virus checker and reinstalled it. I had a feeling that it was Bullguard running constantly in the background. Seems to ahve helped (and I am so going to regret saying that)

I'm running into this issue as well. I'm finding sporadic reports of it around, but few solutions. A common suggestion seems to be that it is a problem with resuming from sleep mode, but my machine never goes to sleep. The issue only appeared after five months or so. Microsoft's knowledgebase and help was useless.

I thought this post great because I finally found a solution. Alas, for a while it worked...but not for long.

Damn you Vista.

Yep...same problem here. I've tried suggestions from both this blog and other sites. Nothing seems to work. Has anyone noticed that this started to occur immediately after the last Microsoft "security update" install? Are we at Microsoft's mercy as to when this will be fixed? Here's another user that will be "downgrading" to XP. God, I have to learn about Linux and make the switch.

Hi, great to find this site. I've just experienced the same exact problem. I assumed it was my McAfee which was doing an automatic scan. I tried to cancel it, and BAM, everything freezes up, screen goes black and then the error message. It worried me as recently a laptop died on me, and when I was forced to reboot on my new one, the exact same symptoms resulted. I thought the drive had failed. I then booted to safe mode, did a system restore to, wait for it, the day before the latest windows update, and Im back on again. Who knows for how long though, but it seems to be, yet again, Windows update screwing us over. How on earth can they allow these updates to go out if they screw up peoples systems?? Absolute disgrace.

Thanks, once my troublesome machine comes out of it's current terminal slumber, I will try your suggestions of using Defender and/or reinstalling Bullguard.
I think it's disgraceful that Microsoft a) haven't fixed it and b) haven't acknowledged it on the kb.

Appreciate your help.

Hey all. I see this thread is somewhat old, but I had the same problem and I tried many solutions I found around the net and none seemed to work until someone here mentioned the windows search in the services panel. Now he said to disable it, but mine was already disabled so I decided to enable it and POW my system seems to be in good working order. I may be speaking to soon, but if so I will post back.

Ok disregard the above post. I spook to soon.

The simplest and most reliable way to fix this problem is to uninstall "Service Pack 1". My computer is fine when that isn't installed, every so often it does a forced install, the problem returns, I uninstall and the problem goes.

Now the real problem, some programmes will only run if you have the Service Pack installed, something about resource allocation. So I can no longer uninstall. I have almost fixed it (meaning it is now an intermittent problem rather than constant problem). Turn of the side bar and Windows Defender. I believe that Windows Defender "argues" with other applications, such and anti-viral software.

There is a trick to turning off Windows Defender. It is a crafty little thing. First go in to "Programs", find Windows Defender, open it and turn it off. But, despite doing this, when you reboot your computer Windows Defender will still be running but in silent mode, ie it's running in "off" mode. To stop it running when you reboot you now need to go into msconfig (use the search bar). You will find "Windows Defencder" under the "Services" tab, AND IT IS STILL TICKED!!!!! Untick it. Ignore the warnings. And there you go.

I had this problem but I fixed it by uninstalling an antivirus that was incompatible with the other antivirus running.
